The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) and Tenglong Group have engaged with the management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, to present a proposal for the construction of a 20,000-room hostel facility aimed at addressing student accommodation challenges.
The Director of Operations at the Minerals Development Fund, Mr. Frank Kwesi Hayford, stated that the initial plan for an 8,000-room facility has been expanded to 20,000 rooms due to the rising demand for student housing.
He further mentioned that financial partners and MDF are in discussions with the university management to determine the next steps for the project.
“To ensure the smooth execution of this project, we want to establish a joint committee between the Minerals Development Fund and the university. Our goal is to have the first batch of students housed in the new hostel by 2027,” he stated.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Asamoah, expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing student accommodation and assured that the university would collaborate with its partners to ensure the project is swiftly implemented.
He emphasized that the initiative would help bridge the gap in student housing and alleviate accommodation challenges on campus.

Mr. David Johnson Attafuah, Director of Administration and Human Resources at MDF, highlighted that the project falls under the government’s “Bed for All” policy, which aims to provide adequate on-campus accommodation for tertiary students.
He also noted that MDF plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KNUST to foster mutual collaboration.
This agreement would include grants for specific projects at the College of Engineering to support the university in addressing some of its critical needs.
